Vocal tips to help your voice
1. Always be fully hydrated, drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol (if possible although that’s a hard one).

2. Always warm up your voice before singing at full voice, like waking up in the morning the voice needs to get going slowly and gently, try humming with your lips lightly together, work in the middle of your range, a simple scale up and then down, so that your lips vibrate, you should not humm through your nose. Gradually extend the range of the scale.

3. Check your posture in a mirror when singing in practice, look for tension in your shoulders and your jaw, keep your shoulders down and relaxed and your jaw loose.

4. Don’t be frightened to use your breath when singing, most people don’t, and your vocal cords need that air to work properly, so practice daily, take a deep breath, through the mouth not your nose, as breathing through your nose closes the back of the throat, (don’t raise your shoulders when breathing in) try and fill the lowest part of the lungs as possible, hold the breath for a couple of seconds and then when breathing out make a hissing sound and keep the air flow and that sound as constant as possible till all your breath is used up.

5. Enjoy your voice and the sound it makes, it’s the only one of its kind, it’s an instrument that’s as individual as you are and worth taking care of.

And remember even the worlds greatest singers had to start somewhere.
